Animated Graphics for the PBS Origins History Webseries
Over the course of 2024, I worked with the team at PBS Utah on a series of four episodes of the PBS Digital Studios series In the Margins for their history channel, Origins. These episodes covered a diverse range of topics, and with that came a diverse range of animation challenges. Some topics offered extensive archival material to work with, others offered none at all and required original illustration, but all four episodes manage to be visually rich and use animation to advance the storytelling. I conceptualized, designed, and executed all the motion graphics for these episodes.
Besides the animated sequences, I created a package of backgrounds, animated wipes, lower thirds, and other on-screen graphics to add context and structure, plus a logo build to serve as the main title. The visually dense but understated design of the animated sequences dovetails with the information-rich, brisk-paced delivery of the essay, giving the pieces some nice visual punch without seizing attention from the narration. Like all PBS Digital Studios productions, quality, well-researched information takes center stage, and the production rises to meet it.
In addition to the four full-length episodes, I also creates a series of four vertical shorts.
As a lifelong public broadcasting viewer, I could not be more proud to see the PBS logo bug overlaid on my work!
